Frequently Asked Questions (Chutneys)

What is the difference between chutney and relish?

Chutney is typically slow-cooked, sweet-sour, and gently spiced, often with fruit as well as vegetables, giving a softer, jammy texture. Relish tends to be brighter, sharper, and more vegetable-forward, with more crunch and less cooking time. If it feels rich and spoonable, it’s usually a chutney.

Most of our chutneys are gently spiced rather than hot. If you’re looking for heat, the spicier options include Tomato Chutney, Chilli Jam, and Onion, Garlic & Chilli Chutney. Others focus more on sweetness, fruit depth, and balance, making them ideal for cheese and meats.

For cheese, fruit-led chutneys like fig, pear, plum, or apple-based recipes work beautifully, especially with Cheddar, Brie, and blue cheeses. For meats, richer chutneys such as tomato, onion, or spiced fruit chutneys add acidity and depth to pork, ham, sausages, and cold cuts.

Cheddar pairs best with chutneys that balance sweetness and acidity. Fig-based chutneys, apple or pear chutneys, and gently spiced tomato chutneys all complement Cheddar’s sharpness without overpowering it.

Absolutely. Chutneys work brilliantly as glazes for roasted meats, stirred into sauces or gravies, folded into marinades, or spread into sandwiches and wraps. They’re designed to be as useful in cooking as they are on the table.
